Start. Sell. Work. Grow.
|
|
You know what you sold.
You do not know what you earned.
A tailor in Cape Coast has the best December she has ever had — every wedding and every end-of-year party wants something new. A food-truck owner in Detroit has his best summer. Both are busier than ever. Both reach the end of the month unable to pay a supplier on time.
Neither did anything wrong at the counter. They just could not see that one product was selling at a loss, that customers were paying later than suppliers wanted paying, and that the money in the drawer was not the money in the business. Sales tell you how busy you are. Only the books tell you whether it was worth it.

This week’s focus · Bookkeeping & financial management
Close the month. Every month. Without doing it yourself.
You keep running the business. Pesewa ONE records what came in and what went out — cash, bank and mobile money — puts it in the right place, and hands you a short summary at the start of each month. The habit most small businesses never build, done for you.
| — |
Bookkeeping Micro — $50 / GHS 125 a month. Up to 100 transactions a month recorded, categorised and closed, with a monthly summary by day 10. |
| — |
Bookkeeping Standard — $120 / GHS 325 a month. Up to 500 transactions, reconciled, with management figures you can actually read. |
| — |
Catch-up — $60 / GHS 150 per month behind. The months you never recorded, rebuilt from receipts, bank statements and mobile money records. |
| — |
Break-even & margin analysis — $120 / GHS 325. How many you must sell to cover your costs, what each product really contributes, and the loss-making lines named. |
| — |
Cash-flow forecast — $180 / GHS 475. Twelve months ahead, with the assumptions about who pays when written down, so the tight months stop arriving as a surprise. |
|
The product you are proudest of may be the one losing money. It is usually the one that takes longest, uses the most material or gets discounted for regulars. Owners rarely see it because the busy feeling hides it. A break-even and margin analysis puts a name next to every line that is costing you more than it brings in.

One thing to do this week
Work out what one of your best sellers really costs you.
Pick one item. Add up the materials or stock, the packaging, the transport to get it, a share of rent and power, and your own time at a fair hourly rate. Then put the selling price next to it.
Most owners have never done this sum for a single product. If the gap is smaller than you thought, you have just found out why the busy months feel so tight. If it is negative, you have found the most valuable fifteen minutes of your year.

Still writing receipts by hand?
Invoices, receipts, quotations, petty cash, stock and payroll templates, all in your business’s name and colours, in three days — $40 / GHS 100. Good records start with paper that looks like it belongs to a business.
